excellent ahi tuna sandwich :)

Love this place. Perfect college burger place -- good burgers, love Laura's Cobb Salad, feels like a pub, but isn't a cement floor tavern either. Gets crowded on game days.

Micky's is the go to place for FAC in IC. Great bar, great food and the staff is always really cool.

Excellent hamburgers.

Sadly I have to give my former workplace and favorite local pub a not terribly positive review. Yes I was the doorman at Mickey's from 1989 to 1992 and loved the burgers cheese fries fantastic onion rings and probably my all-time favorite the conglomeration. Salads were great too and of course the drinks were reliable and exactly what you needed. I think someone told me there's been a change in ownership and I wouldn't say I'm enthusiastic about that change after dining here for lunch Saturday. The menu has changed significantly. The onion rings that were world-class have been changed and while they still call them "hand battered"onion rings the flavor just wasn't there and they were not impressive. For probably the first time in my life I didn't finish an order of onion rings at Mickey's. Sad. I also had the conglomeration: the meat and cheese were right but the bread has changed from a basic rye bread to what I would call an attempt at some fancier artisinal bread that was falling apart and Just didn't do it's job. Also the conglomeration was quite small and didn't live up to the good old days. We also have the lucky burger which was the burger with corn beef right and that was tasty and the fries were fine. Overall Mickey's is still there but it has fallen since it's glory days with menu changes and maybe new mgmt that I think is still trying to find its way.

I love Micky's! The food is so good now that they've changed owners. I normally just get a burger and fries- their fries are amazing btw!! Ordered a Bloody Mary last time I was there, those are great as well. The only thing I would say kept me from a 5 star rating was that most of the staff is pretty rude. I've worked in a bar downtown before and just because you're a college student, doesn't mean you can be an asshole. Recommend it!

Great place!! Great staff. Great food and beers on tap. Kid friendly. Had one of the best Reuben sandwiches I've ever had here.
(5)Matthew O.
Great service. Came in with my young son, the server went out his way to make him welcome. great food.

First visit since they re-opened. Great atmosphere, excellent food, family friendly!

Daughter just started at U of Iowa so Hawkeye Alum Aunti told us to go to her favorite Iowa City establishment. Great call, Aunt Brooke. We got a table outside, at around 6:30. The guys ordered fish n chips and the gals split a burger. Everyone was happy. I think I'd get the fish n chips next time, the bite I scrounged from a begrudging son was quite tasty. We ordered some hot wings to share as an appetizer---they were fantastic, nice and zingy! We enjoyed watching the town shift from daytime to nightlife time. As a mild-mannered type, daughter was a little nervous, but Big 10 alumns mom and dad knew the fun was just beginning. I'm sure we'll spend some time here over the next four years.

I've eaten here probably six or seven times in the past year and the food is always fantastic. Their fish and chips are my favorite, but the burgers are very good as well. Every time I went here, the bartenders and waitresses have always been extremely helpful and polite. I also love the casual and laid back atmosphere. For me, a lot of Iowa City's bars are just too intense and loud. Micky's is generally a lot more mellow than the other bars downtown. It's the kind of place you go if you want a drink or two, a great burger, and a conversation. Easily my favorite place to grab food in Iowa City.

Really enjoy foods from this place. Last time I went, my friend and I ordered the Scotch Eggs. OMG!!! It was awesome. The egg was fried with sausage meat wrapped around it. Even though it was a little bit on the greasy side, but the texture and the flavor were unforgettable. Their sweet potato fries were delicious too. I would just go there just for their sweet potato fries. The place provides really good service. I really enjoy this place.
(4)Cameron J.
Awesome staff and service. Arguably the best Reuben in town and I have to admit the bartender makes a mean black n' blue. Decent beer selection. They have a killer patio out front that allows for great people watching on Dubuque street. My only complaint is that I wished the patio stayed open longer. Fun place to go if you want to get away from the craziness of other bars downtown.

Last but certainly not least we, including BIL's friend, walked across the street to Micky's which also happened to be on my parent's crawl list too. The bar area was even smaller because a good part of the back half of the space was reserved for restaurant/family patrons. I didn't mind as we were able to pull up three seats and start our shooting of shiz. This time around I wasn't paying too much attention of what was on the TV nor what fun little tidbits were being gabbed between my BIL and his friend. I wasn't trying to be rude or anything but this bar was jumpin' and loud as all get-out so even if I tried to hear, I couldn't. So I did the polite nodding, appropriate laughing just so it seemed like I was including myself in the frivolity. In the sonic madness I did manage to meet and make eye contact with the new owner which also happens to be an old friend of the BIL's. After the pleasantries and again sipping water, I spotted the touch screen POS system which had Scotch Eggs listed on one of the buttons. I about gasped for air as I'd been looking for an establishment to try this "delight" as others have described it in my circle of foodies. For those of you that don't know, Scotch Eggs are hard boiled eggs wrapped in sausage meat and deep fried! I kept having a good vs. evil battle in my head and somehow good won in the end but I'll be back for them! Overall I loved the vibe and definitely knowing my BIL's friend owns the place helps. I will be back with bells and other things on as to not scare the locals!
(5)Brandon R.
Great food for pub food. The staff are all extremely friendly and always have smiles on their faces, which is a huge plus in my book. The food was a little above average. I would suggest the conglomeration. I will be stopping here again in the future!
(4)Colbi M.
I absolutely love it here. I have been coming to Mickey's since I was a little kid and is still one of my favorite places to eat. I am frequently dieting and they always have something that fits into what I can have and it's always delicious! The food always comes out fairly quickly too.
(5)Kenneth H.
If I had never eaten at Micky's before, this would be a better review. But our latest visit was pure disappointment. Good service still, good atmosphere, and like so many others, I've been coming to Mickey's for decades. But the food has changed. The burger has turned into a slider. I can literally palm it, and you can't see it around the sides of my hand. The fries I used to remember? Yeah, those changed as well. My wife's quesadilla? She only had three bites (and she was extremely hungry upon entering). Top it off with now I'm bent over with stomach cramps, I think I've spent my last time in Mickey's, preferring to remember how it was instead.

This bar is simply the best when it comes to home made, great quality, food. The staff is genuinely good at there jobs and the food is fresh and always hits the spot!
(5)Jo B.
Great place for lunch. Ordered the fish and chips and they came out very fast and very hot! Service was attentive but not annoying.
(5)Chris T.
The service was outstanding from the moment I walked in the door. The waitress seemed very knowledgeable of the menu, and the owner was walking around making sure everything was good, stopping at each table. The atmosphere was very nice, not too much of a dive, but not too fancy either. The food was outstanding, and I will definitely go back next time I am in town.
(5)Ben C.
Good service and food! Chicken was awesome, but the new buns are too hard and dry. Crinkle cut fries are the best.
(4)Mike D.
Great bar in the downtown Iowa City area. The bartenders always know what they are doing and seemed to be very well trained. The bar itself is kind of small but if you go during the week it's not to bad! The last time I ate there the food was pretty good. If I remember correctly I had a tenderloin and it was outstanding. Good tap beers
(4)Scott S.
I would have given them a four, but my last experience drops them. I had two great cheeseburgers in a row, one cooked medium and one cooked medium rare, both cooked perfectly. Also, in general Micky's has great french fries, some of the best you can get downtown. Last time, I ordered the burger medium, and it came well, and the fries were under-done. This is the exact inverse of how things should be done -- fries on the well side, good ground beef on the rare side. Staff is attentive and friendly, they get quite a cross-section of the community for lunch. I'll re-visit the review if I get the burger cooked right next time and last time was an aberration. Much better than Short's, IMO, which overcooks their fries and their beef.
(3)Kineret Z.
Micky's was my favorite restaurant in Iowa City. Today I went there after a few month of not going and it was horrible. The chicken wings were undercooked and very greasy, The hamburger was overcooked and the bread was steal. Even the french fries were not good. I should had known when I got in, it was also empty and the silverware was dirty. Sorry, I am not going back.
(1)Mike L.
Get the Conglo. Also great Krinkle cut French fries. They are seriously the best fries I have ever had. This place hasn't changed since 1998 - it's perfect.
(5)Tom B.
The people were very friendly But it took 45 minutes to get a tasteless hamburger that wouldn't fill up a toddler. Always was a fan of mickey's. It has been 8 years since I was back and I was extremely disappointed. Little nothing burger and mushy sugary sweet potato fries. Next time I'm in IC I'll go to my other burger joint.
(1)Katie S.
Meh, this place was totally not doing it for me. Co-workers and I went here after long day of work. We all ordered something different and were not pleased with much of it. I order clam chowder soup and it didnt taste like clam chowder, I didnt eat it. I order fettucine alfredo, it was ok, I have had way better though. This place just did nothing for me.
(2)Jeff H.
They need more and better salad options, like Greek salad, so the wife says. Also, their breakfast burrito is dry and not very tasty (have since learned the sausage in mine was way over cooked; it was also the same burrito that you could get at Bread Garden Market, but don't know whether still served under new owners), the rolled in sausage hard-boiled egg appetizer is definitely a pass, Manager Christa is now gone to Joseph's, and they serve close to no traditional Irish fare for a supposedly Irish pub, but the J.D., Dave, Aaron, and other friendly people, Smithwick's Ale (never had a bad one), fried pickles, and free popcorn will always keep me coming back!
(4)Andy V.
I feel this place needed a 3.5 but sadly I can not give half stars. The renovated pub is very nice. The food was good, however I felt as though it was overpriced. I am a frequent shopper at the Bread Garden (which I love by the way) and as much as I love their meat and bread I was disappointed to see it used here. I ordered the Italian beef and it was good, but again I buy boars head Italian beef weekly as well as bread garden bread and I could have made this sandwich at home, and have. I would love to see this place make their own bread and roast their own meats, THEN I would be satisfied with paying $10 for it. On a side note, I love the atmosphere.
(3)Clayton L.
The best all around bar food in Iowa City; burgers rival Short's!
(4)Ellie F.
Probably my favorite meal stop on the drive from Chicago to San Jose. Very yummy pub-style sandwiches. And hearty sides! My brother got a heaping cup of french onion soup. Yum yum yum. They had a banner up for drink specials I WISH we could've taken advantage of. Really made me miss college towns.
(4)Tim T.
Food taste OK except my fish and chips was fried pieces of fish and french fries??? Place was very hot as the AC was broken which I can appreciate. However, the AC has been broken for over a week. Fish and Chips french fries and no AC for a week tells me there is a owner management attitude problem. Too bad cause the fish part was kinda tasty. Probably won't go there anytime soon. $60 for sandwiches for 6 people but that included a kid's meal.
(2)Sarah S.
I got food poisoning from eating a burger and fries here...beef has to rather old to get you sick enough to throw up all night. I called the next day to let management know, and was told they would check with the kitchen staff and call me back. Still waiting on that callback...
(1)Peter B.
New owners cutting corners: frozen burger patties, cheap buns. Used to get a blue cheese burger, and there would be huge chunks of cheese on top. Now: some blue cheese dressing. Hope they get it straightened out!
(2)Anna H.
Pretty good food and good beer. Some times its crowded and very noisy.
(3)Dan S.
We ate there after the "reopening". We got chips, salsa and queso for an app. They gave us about 20 chips and the worst salsa I have ever tasted in my life. It tasted like someone smashed on tomato in the alley and put it in a bowl. The queso was good, so we orderd more chips. They charged us another $1 for an already overpriced app at $9. My wife had a cheeseburger. It was greasy and undercooked, with blood dripping on the plate. She sent it back and she got a hockey puck back. So overcooked she could not eat it. She also had about 10 french fries on her plate. Again overpriced at $10. I had an old favorite the Conglomeration. It casn out burnt on one-side and undercooked on the other side. Not sure who the chef is but he/she needs to head back to culinary school or at least high-school home ec class. I too has about 12 fries on the plate. Very poor food quality. The service was horrible. We waited for 10 miutes for someone to seat us when they were tables available. It took 15 minutes for sodas and another 15 minutes for chips & dip? It was an all around bad experience. We love the "old" Micky's, so we will give it another try, but if we get the same treatment and food quality, we will not return. I hope they get their act together.

Micky's has been a regular stop for us for nearly 25 years. It's location is great: right in the heart of downtown IC and next door to the world famous Prairie Lights Bookstore. It's a very comfortable pub atmosphere, with a clientele that runs from undergraduate students to emeritus faculty. My all-time favorite meal: a Conglomeration (grilled ham/turkey/cheese sandwich with ranch dressing), a side of cheese fries, and a couple of margaritas.
(5)Bobby W.
Best place in IC to get bar food before drinking that night; try the tenderloin, French onion soup or Asian pasta. They have pretty stellar bloodys there too
(5)Ryan K.
I'm surprised this place doesn't have a better rating. It's a little expensive unless you wait for specials, but so is everything in downtown Iowa City. The burgers are simply great, so I like the place.
(5)Charles A.
Micky's food is great, and they have basket specials nearly every night of the week. I've been there twice, had the burger basket special both times and was very pleased with the quality and quantity of food.
(5)Courtney H.
Visiting IC for the first time and not knowing where to go to grab a quick lunch with the pops, we just walked by this place and decided to try it out. The food was tasty, nothing spectacular, but definitely good. I know everyone around these parts serves Fat Tire, but since there isn't any in Boston, I was psyched to find it on tap and at a reasonable price. Only minus a star for their tiny bathroom. Needless to say we were pleasantly surprised, and my dad even took my mom the next weekend when she came to visit! Glad to know there's one place that is good whenever I'm in town.
(4)Vince A.
Food is excellent (Conglomeration rocks) for a college bar. Cetrainly gets very crowded and tight which is it's downfall, along with a basement bathroom.
(4)Jessica W.
Stopped in impulsivley for breakfast with a couple friends this past weekend and was not too impressed with the food and drinks. We ordered bloody marys and they were not that tasty and the celery stick they give with your drink was this massive log of celery i.e the part you throw away. The breakfast choices were minimal. I had a traditional breakfast of eggs, hashbrowns and toast. I ordered my eggs fried but they came poached and overcooked and the hashbrowns were thick potato slices that could have stood another 15 minutes cooking (a little too crunchy for me). Even though the place started to get busy as we left, I probably wouldn't come back here for food or drink.
(2)Jason L.
Gotta love Mickey's! One of the things I love best about Mickey's is that the theme of their menu has stayed tried and true to "Pub"-style eatery. Another thing that I love is that over the years I have been able to watch that evolve as they try new things and add their own flavor to pub food. While the conditions can easily become crowded the atmosphere stays friendly and casual. Take the time to read the story in the menu about the history of the wooden bar you may be sitting at. The best feature: they make the best bloody marys in town, and have so for the past 15 years I've been going there.
(4)Chris S.
Now this is a fantastic bar with food. Good selection of alcohol but what I really like here are their burgers. I always think I should try something else but the blue cheese bacon burger calls out to me like a lover. Drawing me into a delicious burger, fantastic fries, and beer. Their weekly specials are always a good thing to keep in mind and it's right downtown so pretty much close to anything. I agree with Megan's post, it can DEFINITELY get loud in there as the evening passes and it gets more crowded. Even so, it's pretty much fantastic.
(4)Sandra A.
Their food is a standard, lazy bar food. If you think standard, lazy bar food is good, then their food is good. I've had better standard lazy bar food, and I think you can get better standard lazy bar food in town. It's not inexpensive, either, I might add, for standard lazy bar food. I'm surprised so many people are taken with their offerings. As per the post that said this is the best burger in IC? That's simply delusion. Short's are a mile better. If you say Short's is to expensive, I'd rather pay $3 at George's Buffet.
(1)Liz A.
I went here for the food once - big mistake! I had a salad and the worst salad I've ever had (besides Vito's). Honestly, I didn't know you could mess one up until I went here. Then, I started going on Tuesday/Wednesday for Margarita night. $1.50 (now $2) margaritas on the rocks (soooo good and strong) and free chips & salsa. I loved it! Great music, chill atmosphere and you never knew who would be there for a night. I was able to go with one person and have a conversation or go with a group of 6 and have a blast.
(5)Brad S.
Hands down the best burgers in Iowa City (and can be obtained on the cheap after class too). Night scene is lively and reasonably priced.
(5)Jennifer T.
Micky's offers great deals on American pub food in the afternoons and evenings - perfect for walking out of class! A great place for groups to snack on free popcorn and finish it off with delicious burgers (my husband likes to top his with cream cheese). If you ask nicely, they'll put a shot of vodka in your chocolate milkshake, too - a combination that tastes great.
(5)Stephen Y.
Crazy especially with the U of Iowa band playing INSIDE... but amazing atmosphere ! Salad OK... Beer even BETTER !
